The Town of Milk River and the Village of Coutts that share the same water supply are facing a water shortage after crews are unable to pump enough to meet demand. The water limitations on non-essential use are the cause of a water diversion system in Montana failing catastrophically. The diversion system draws water from Saint Mary River to the Milk River.

What's known as drop 5, is where the catastrophe happened. Large concrete structures that supply water to ranches, farms and communities.

The United States has declared an emergency with funds. Repairs are moving forward with supplies being brought in from Canada to the remote locations. However, heavy rain has caused delays.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is expecting to have repairs to at least drops 2 and 5 achieved by September.
